Like a good little Tonefiendling, I've completed the four pedals from the DIY club. Only problem is waiting on the enclosures. I'm making my own out of wood, and it's been delayed by an illness in the family. I'm pretty jazzed to have them boxed up, though.

Today I am taking a new plunge: I'm opening up my guitar for the first time. I have a Fender Blacktop Strat, and Fender messed up the wiring on them. Instead of Position 4 offering a split neck pickup, both positions 2 and 4 are both pickups split. Not a lot of tonal diversity. I am going to do my best to restore it to what should be factory default.

That is so cool!

I've been real interested in alternative stompbox enclosures. I've been learning to use a laser cutter at TechShop, and have been thinking about cool wooden boxes. I also like the idea of non-stomp stompboxes — i.e., desktop units for use when recording and mixing at the computer.

One of the coolest enclosures I ever saw was the also the least practical: back before he played with Sonic Youth, Jim O'Rourke used to put circuits inside candy boxes — you know, the heart-shaped cardboard ones. Sure, they'd only last five minutes, but I loved the attitude!

One thing to be aware of with non-metal enclosures is that they often need to be shielded to prevent excessive hum. Stewart McDonald sells sheilding tape, as well as sheilding paing. You can also get aluminum tape from big-box home improvement stores - but it may not work as well.

Best or luck!

Here are the finished wooden enclosures, all sanded, stained, and poly'd. They're far from perfect, with some off-center holes and a nick on one or two They're mine, though, and I think they're pretty.

I had done some research before I started working the wood, so I have already acquired the shielding, but thanks for the tip anyway!
