Besides being the name of my new band. I just gave some flat wound strings a test. Feel great sound good. They seem to emphasize the fundamental, or lack overtones or something. The sound is mellow but clear. These sound interesting with Fuzz.

They lasted all of an hour, before I had to get rid of them. The wound G string does not bend like a solid string. Boy I gotta push the G string almost to the A string to get a whole note bend! I think it might be the flat type winding having an effect on bending, though the G seems to require much more effort than the other strings. I'm too weak, I'll admit the flat wounds defeated me.

For the record I used D'Addario Chrome XL extra light gauge. These are probably extra light for jazz players, but more like medium gauge for wimpy rock amateurs at 0.010 to 0.048.

I started my electric playing with Dean Markley Medium round wounds, 11-52. I always broke the wound G in no time flat and put on a plain 20-ish. Not easy bending, but bendable, and if you're buying singles you can get what fits your set. So my point is that while buying a spare string isn't ideal, if you like everything else about the set, it's not impossible to work around.

I've never had a problem with the wound third string but I mostly play slide and the wound third sounds cool against the other wound strings. I don't really bend strings side to side but I do a little pressure vibrato thing. I recently tried a set of Roto-Sound guitar strings called "tape wound" on one of my Switch guitars they feel smooth like flat wounds but still have bite enough to tickle my fx pedals. They seem to stay in tune very well give a nice vibe to the guitar and are fun to play. I can't really speak to durability etc. as I only play slide fingerpicked so YMMV. I used to put Roto-Sounds on my bass, so I thought I'd give 'em a try when I saw them at juststrings.com. I'll probably keep using them on this guitar and a couple of other Switch guitars I have they got the right amount of growl mixed with sweetness.
