I intend to trim some full-scale D'Addario nylon tape-wound bass strings to fit a short-scale Epi bass. The construction is a flat nylon tape wrap over a more conventional round-wound string. (Why net get the right short-scale strings? These were $6 for the set. I'm cheap.)

I'm concerned about the windings coming undone, which is a problem often enough with snipping normal roundwound bass strings. Is there a procedure that anyone can recommend to me that has worked for them?

um, never tried this, but I think it would probably be safe to wrap some tape around the area you want to cut, then cut it (so there's still about 1/4 inch of tape on the string) and then put a dot of super glue on the end. I think that would hold pretty well.... probably 🙂

So I finally got around to this. Hadn't considered that the tuners accept the string ends in the center of the shaft like old Tele or Strat tuners. This means that the full thickness of the E wouldn't have fit in. The strings are narrower at the portion above the wrap covered by the fabric "silks" so, rather than wind all of the silk length on, I snipped the strings so only enough silk was on to fit in the tuner on the E and G, where the tuners are closest to the nut, and a bit more on the A and D. Some extra wraps on the E, but not ridiculous. With some silk still on, I'm not too worried about unraveling.

Nice strings. Easy playing and much more "bass" sounding.
