Post Burns Pickups?

Anyone have any experience with Burns pickups — whose most famous user, of course, is Brian May.

I have one Burns-equipped guitar, a Baldwin Virginian that I picked up in the ’90s for $100. Someone is selling a pristine one an EBay for — ack! — $6,500. Mine is a slightly different model, and it's beat to hell, but I love it — but really, it's just a funky-cool piece of plywood crap with a bolt-on neck and gaudy plastic appointments, though it has neat pickups and an interesting semi-hollow tone. I usually keep my Virginian tuned down to B (BEADF#B, low to high), though when I played with Polly Harvey, I tuned it AAAAAA — the notorious "Gary Glitter" tuning from "Rock & Roll, Part 2," which Polly used to write a lot of the To Bring You My Love material.

Anyway, Baldwin made mostly cheapo junk, but some models had these cool Burns pickups. It's got fat-sounding single-coil, but because they're embedded in such a quirky guitar, I've never been able to sort out exactly which sonic properties derive from the pickups, and which from instrument's oddball construction.

Can anyone add any info here? I've never even tried one of those Brian May reissues!

I have a guitar called a mini-May that is a travel sized guitar with a single pickup at the bridge, made in China. It is a sweet little guitar that has a unique sound very much like Brian May's tone at times. I got it as a restock for $85 incl. S&H with gig bag a few years ago.I have a thing for these small sized guitars they are a nice change for my mainly slide based style. The pickup is the same in all the current Brian May guitars. Nice finish and neck a very cool guitar.

Has a version called the Brighton Rock that are sized like strat pickups. I have been thinking about getting a set for my Am Std GR-ready strat they are $85 for a set of 3 . Pretty affordable the main thing that has made me move slowly is my strat which due to the built in GR hex pickup and electronics makes doing any work on it non-trivial (there are 8 or so teeny plugs that are delicate but need removal and reinstallation). I have and like the P90 humbucker sized pickups I got from them for one of my Switch guitars (it's sort of like a Les Paul Jr) they are the "Mean" variety with more output but have a nice P90ish sound with hum canceling in the center position not exactly vintage but very usable and enjoyable to play. I've also used their bridges, controls and switches all were well made and easy to install. I also have a travel guitar from them with a 24" scale, single humbucker at the bridge, it was a black Friday special with very nice gig bag, tuner/headphone amp for $105. It is pretty well made with excellent finish but has a slight problem with the control route so 1 screw of the cover is loose. My only real complaint is that it has only a volume but no tone control, it needs long shaft controls and I can't find a dual control with a long shaft. I'll have to drill a hole for a tone control. That being said it has a very nice humbucker from their own line.

It was a great deal for $105

The Seymour Duncan Custom Shop makes Burns pickups that look just like the ones in Brian May's guitar. I'm assuming they sound terrific.

I just saw a pointer to these folks with a recommendation for doing an authentic Trisonic repro at a decent price: https://www.adeson.co.uk/ I gather that current Burns models are pretty correctly built but outsourced to Korea. They do seem to be available from Burns in a Strat-sized format. https://www.burnsguitars.com/accessories.php

Supposedly the GFS Brighton Rock are based on the Burns. I haven't tried them, but the clips sound decent. https://www.guitarfetish.com/Brighton-Rock-Vintage-Spec-Alnico-Pickups-Classic-Queen-sound_p_1514.html

I have been in the process of building a guitar from scratch and bought a set of Brighton Rocks PUs from GF. UPS says they are out for delivery, but I'm at work and can not sign for them today. Should have them by Thursday. Of course the guitar I'm building is far from complete.

Just got the pickups today. Might be a little while before they get into an instrument. The quality looks good. They seem well made. They have chrome covers that are soldered to the ground wire. this makes it hard to get inside. Seems like they are wax potted. I bought some black metal mounting rings, the pickups fit these perfectly. I could post some pictures, but they look just like what's posted on the GF site.
