I think it was Joe who mentioned the old electra cartridge system in another thread. I have been wanting to play with that format for awhile, but I haven't gotten any further than a few scattered ideas in my notebooks. Anyways, it seems that Devi Ever if close to finalizing an open format pedal cartridge system. https://www.consolefx.com/ While I have some concerns over the size limitations, it looks like a really sweet platform to play with. It's designed for pedals, but it wouldn't take much modification to build an onboard host system. I don't think it will be launched for a couple months yet, but I think it's worth noting here now for those that are interested in such things.

One of the chief considerations of making any kind of standard cartridge system for in-guitar usage is the number of controls you're willing to require for the guitar. Large numbers will make the faint of heart shy away, but the more you have, the more options you have for fun effects. It would be super fun, though.

yeah, I was the same. I don't think I'd need more than 3 pots. However, you could easily turn the other two pots into two mini switches. To me, that would be both more practical and more aesthetically appealing. Of course, you can wire up the i/o any way you want. The first question will be whether or not I can make it fit comfortably in a guitar.

I'm totally stoked about seeing what she comes up with!

Regarding numbers of controls: I swear, the more I mod guitars and build stompboxes, the more convinced I become that less is more in terms of controls. So often, you don't really need as many gain and master volume controls as you think you do.

Having said that, I'm eager to experiment with an onboard resonant bandpass filter, sort of a cross between a Chandler Tone-X and a Systech Harmonic Generator. Maybe just a concentric pot controlling resonance and cutoff frequency.

Yeah, I hear ya. I'm a big fan of the orange squeeze, spring chicken, and some of the other single knob pedals. Those are the ones I'm chiefly interested in adapting for onboard use. But I'm less confident about matching the output of some of the distortion/fuzz circuits. Anyways, you don't need to use all the i/o and if you did, joysticks, concentric pots, or even a strip of micro faders could be used to keep things minimal on top.
