Has anyone tried winding their own? I've been intrigued by the Schatten pickup winding kit a Stew Mac, but it gets such mediocre reviews.

The Cuisinart Pasta Maker attachment gets really bad reviews too. But maybe it could be converted to a pickup winder? Seriously though, I think the variable slowish speed of a Cuisinart stand mixer might be easier to adapt to pickup winding than your electric drill. That said, it's pretty low on my list of things to do.

Talk to Jason Lollar. He's republished his how-to as an e-book, including instructions on building your own winder. Probably lots cheaper than the Schatten.

I do! The Schatten is underpowered and over priced. I actually have one I bought back in '06. Three years later the speed control burned out. I thought it was the motor, so I got a new one from Schatten, and that stopped working too. Now I power it from a DeWalt variable speed drill!

I make mostly bass pickups, but I'm working on some guitar models, and one of my pickups, which comes in guitar humbucker size, would work great on guitar. It sounds like a Rickenbacker single coil, but it doesn't hum. 😉

You need to explore the Telecaster Forum DIY section. Guys over there have been winding their own in some very creative ways. Lots of good information. I remember one poster using a sewing machine and a bathroom scale. A lot of people use an electric hand drill or a motor and wire it up to an old calculator. Some how they are connecting the rotation to the equal button so the rotation shows up on the screen.

Here's a thread, this guy is genius at guitar building. He comes up with ingenius methods for making just about anything. https://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-home-depot/241964-diy-scatter-pickup-winder.html
