I don't get the idea that a bolt-on neck joint "doesn't sound like it has as much of a connection" as a glued joint. What's different? Can this variable be isolated from neck and body wood types?

I've had a shitty bolt-on before, but most of my bolt-on guitars have rung a lot louder acoustically than Gibbys I've spent time with.

I was thinking of surface area. If you look at the tendon on a typical LP and added up the surface area which is glued, you'd get more area than the Fender joint, which I figure as roughly 6 square inches. But fenders get great sustain. So there's something more going on. It seems Fenders have a pretty thick chunk of wood below the heel of the neck, which they are solidly attached to.

There's probably some effect from the choice of woods. The maple neck on Fenders seems more dense than the Mahogany used on Gibson.
