I want to try out the Dunlop Tortex III, BUT I CANT FIND ANY.

Those picks that see 90% of my playing time are .88 mm tortex III's 😉 I tried some Tortex Jazz III's, love the tip, but really didn't like the size for the amount of rhythm and chord work that I do, so when I saw these, I grabbed some. They are everything I had imagined. The smooth release of Jazz III's and the feel of the old Tortexes that I know and love.

Lucky! Might i ask if you found them local or ordered them.

I used to play with 1 mil Nylons when I was much younger. Just like Joe describes, strong fundamental and maybe even a bit compressed sounding in the smoothness of the attack, nothing else added. But it's almost like playing with a block of cheese -- disconcertingly soft feeling

Thats why I switched over, softer attack and a little bit more flexibility.

I've always been a "Pick Hound". You name it, and I've probably tried it. To me, there always seems to be a trade-off between tone and feel. If I like the way it sounds, I can't feel the connection to the string. So, I've found about 3 picks that are on varying ends of this tone-feel spectrum.

My favorite for tone is a horn pick. Mine is manufactured by Clayton as part of their exotic line. You can pick up 3 of them for less than $4 at the BIG online retailer. (I use them, but don't want to endorse them)

In the middle is an ULTEX pick that is about 0.8mm or so. It sounds big, with a good attack. However, it still allows me to feel the strings.

Finally on the feel end is a good, old-fashioned, Fender Medium celluloid pick in the "Standard" shape. I can feel everything, but it can sound a bit thin.

I found them locally. Was wandering around a music shop in the town near my summer job. I'd seen them online and been interested but not enough to order them. The opportunity to impulse buy was too much, and I'm glad that I succumbed.

I've done my fare share of pick R&D. Here are some of the collection.

The stone is Soapstone. Stay away from the softer variety. The hard version gives some cool harmonics and what sounds like triplets that have triplets. Joe did comment on something like this awhile back.

It's been Dunlop 500's in 1.14mm for about fourteen years now. I keep a hodge-podge of picks I find on stage, and two different sizes of Jazz Stubbies around for special duties, but the 500's feel and sound better than any garden variety pick I've ever used. Very little string clack or scratch and a rich, clear tone. These days I ride bareback about half the time anyway, and my long term goal is to lose the picks altogether (unless a part demands it).

I buy new picks all the time but I always go back to the 1mm Dunlop nylon.

Same here. 1mm Dunlop nylons are my favorites, and the only ones I pay money for. And they never ware down. I like to keep a lot of different types of picks around when I'm recording, and it seems like people/companies seem to give me picks faster than I can use them.

Has anyone else tried the graphtech TUSQ picks? I think they ware down too fast, but they just seem to add a little something to the sound. I'm not sure how to describe it.

I flexed my Tusq pick and it broke in half , barely touched the strings with it.

I'm all about various flavors of Fender mediums and/or Tortex "Yellow". I lose picks faster than I buy them.

I use 1mm picks with as sharp a tip as possible. My huge clumsy fingers can't hang on to a jazz pick, so right now I playing with Dunlop Stubbys. That will probably change as I try other brands.
