Post Baritones and Bass VIs - lets get low!

I've recently delved into the world of the low - I've got an axe in open C, a B-to-B baritone, and the awesome Mike Robinson of Eastwood Guitars just sent me out one of his Mosrite-inspired Bass VI's for review. This is a whole new land of deep, deep, deep, and I'm loving it, although I am taking my time incorporating these guitars into my gigs. This is partially for practical reasons (I'm too lazy to take four guitars out every time I gig, which is often) and for musical reasons: B-to-B, for instance, is an easy transpose, but a transpose nonetheless and the tuning just favours some keys more than others.
Still, the possibilities simply boggle: from spaghetti-western twang to sweet soul to distorted, thundering rage and with a plethora of timbres not possible in standard tuning, the low guitars have got me in their grasp.
Any thoughts on the lost tribe of guitardom? Cool Harold Bradley stories? Favourite country tunes with tic-tac bass? Favourite Bass VI (using this interchangeably to represent all old-school six string basses) tracks? Pickups, amps or effects that work particularly well? Techniques? Anything?

Just tuned a fake explorer down to C# yesterday for no apparent reason. Maybe I had dreams of sludge or remembered that my hands hurt. For some reason I am drawing a blank on anything else?

I've been looking at the Pawn shop fender Bass VI and the Eastwood Bass VI with a bad case of GAS. When my buddy plays he uses a Sunn 100S thru a 412 cab with a mix of spkrs. It sounds great thru that set up and he uses a mix of guitar and bass pedals. Since I am a Jaguar aficionado I am leaning towards the Fender Bass VI right now.

The Eastwood's pretty freakin' cool. It looks and sounds good, the tuning is stable even under whammy abuse and it's cheap like borscht. It's getting pretty tempting to buy the test model...my wife's gonna' kill me. 😉
One improvement I could fore see would be a varitone control to nuke the bass content in nice graduated steps. Has any manufacturer ever done this? It seems like a natural in an instrument that requires you to radically attenuate the bass at the amp end.

Well the Fender Bass VI my buddy has is set up like a Jaguar there is a switch that cuts most of the bass for a trebly sound. The new custom shop model does not have this set up tho'.

There's a Squier Bass VI coming out, including already trickling out in non-U.S. markets. Details seem pretty accurate, including the "strangle" switch, though the neck radius is supposed to be 9.5" instead of 7.25". Supposed to street for about $350 U.S.

I'm driving myself crazy trying to decide whether I should bring the bari or the bass VI to the gig tonight. I'm playing a guitar-slinger night with a local player who's really great at the Albert King/Robert Cray school of minimal, well-placed, melodious blues playing. Since I am a tasteless maximalist with frustrated jazz tendencies, it should make for good contrast, and I thought I might up the ante by bringing the low notes out. But which one? I'm leaning toward the bari at this time, as it's a little more solo friendly, and I suspect there won't be any shortage of guitar solos tonight. 😉 I did manage to talk myself out of bringing the double-8 steel, and allowed myself to pack a fuzz as a consolation prize.

If you plan on just comping or trading licks at some point...take the Bari..Take the bass if your gonna be happy just holdin down the low end...I tend to graviate Myself toward emotive playing and splash in a little technique where needed but, Im a solost at heart...but I also realized early..you need to have a "play with the band first" mentality.

Thanks NicPic. I did opt for the bari in the end and it made for a cool contrast between two Fender-toting guitarists. The gig went beautifully, by the way; I rarely get to play with another high-functioning guitarist, so it was a ton of fun politely sparring with such a cool player, and the rhythm section was comprised of two good friends.
BTW, I just published an article and video of the Sidejack Bass VI : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g49enMafIpY

That has a ton of wonderfulness in it! Nice price too! I was pointing a friend to Eastwood for his 335 build think that's about the cheapest ebony fretboard 335 type guitar you can buy. A few tweaks and it would be stellar imo .Great info in the post and really like the sound of the demo thanks !
