many many MANY years ago, I bought a Gibson Melody Maker and replaced the single coil pick ups with humbuckers (All I know is they're really Gibson 'buckers - from about 1973 or 4) and I added the Alembic Hotrod kits - I seem to remember they advertised extra hot magnets as their selling point. I also added a 3 way switch for each pickup - so I can get single coil, humbucker, and a weird idea the other guy I worked with had -> 3rd position on the switch used the humbucker along with the 'single coil' from the other pickup as a giant pickup blob.....

I was just curious as to today's opinion of these beasties (without my weird switch setup - I love that & I'm keepin' it!) - When I crank them up in my basement, they sound pretty good to me - but I'd really like to know other's opinions, if for no other reason than to see a discussion happen -

Any comments?

That is a pretty crazy idea but looks like it could make a big change to a pickup.Only Alembic I ever had time with was a nice bass and it had bartolonini pups. You add a blend knob to that setup on your guitar and you will be able to find the sweet spot for both pups using the 3rd coil too. Magnet swapping was more a tone option then output as far as I have seen,only thing I have done is swap a Alinico 5 to a 2 to take harsh,overly bright highs away. Mid 70s PAFs oooh bet they sound good too!

I generally go with using a tone knob and just making the other one a master on a guitar with 3 or 4 knobs already.I have 2 guitars that I had done that way just because my guitar guy suggested it when he was working on my HM Strat. Hm Strats come with a series/parallel 2 way switch for the humbucker. I just upgraded it to a 3 way for series/split/parallel. Not a giant change in sounds really but it really adds to your options.You should go look at some of the Pagey Project stuff in DIY section all kinds of good mods on that guitar.
