I'm just getting started with the diy stuff and have been reading everything I can on the net to get smartened up before diving in. In one place I read that lead-free solder is the best to use...in another place I read that lead-free solder is NOT supposed to be used, but the 63/37 is the best to use. Which is it?!?

I know from my reading that the 63/37 has a much lower melting temperature than the silver solder. Is that the reason to stay away from silver solder? Any help and/or guidance would be appreciated.

ROHS-compliant solder is supposed to be brittle and annoying to work, but I have no experience with it personally. For DIY guitar electronics, either 60/40 or 63/37 rosin-core electric solder will work just fine. Silver-bearing makes shinier joints, but otherwise no better or worse that I can tell.

Silver bearing solder won't strip the gold plating from item to be soldered if you are using items with gold plated leads or pc connections or terminals, regular solder strips the gold off. Silver bearing solder also bonds to steel very well so its great for chassis grounds. While it is a bit more expensive it has advantages for the hobbyist, it is much easier to use, it bonds more quickly which cuts overheating the connections last longer. You used to be able to get it at Radio Shack but I also find it at any electronic supplier.
