I've been playing with Jam Origin's "MIDI Guitar" which is free on iOS. If you have an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch, only other thing you need is an app that triggers with MIDI note messages--synths, samplers, and so on. I was able to work with the onboard mic and headphones to avoid feedback, and it worked okay to pick up an unplugged electric guitar with stunningly quick and fairly sensitive response. A proper line input should probably be much better.

Very fun stuff. I've had a bunch of synth apps to play with their touch screen keyboards, which is fine and all, but it's so much better to be able to play them on my own instrument. There's an interface in my future to make this part of the full kit.
