Post Decent interface with 8 inputs?

Hey

So, back in 2001 I bought an ST Audio (also known as Hoontech) C-Port:

Back in the day it was pretty sweet, especially for the price. However, ST Audio no longer exists, which means I'm stuck using 12 year old drivers, on Windows XP 32 bit. LAME!

So, I'm saving up to eventually replace this audio interface. I would like to keep 8 analogue inputs so I can close mic my drums. It doesn't necessarily need to have mic preamps, since I have an FMR Audio preamp, and can use my (admittedly Behringer) mixer for the rest of the channels if I need to for now.

I'm up for PCI-e, firewire, or USB. I'm kindof going through a bit of an identity crisis regarding operating systems - I've got Mac at work and on the laptop, but I think I'm going to stay windows at home. If, for no other reason, I can afford to keep a reasonably high spec'd home built PC, where as if I bought a Mac for home I would be limited to an iMac. However, it would be nice if the new interface worked in both Sonar on Windows, and whatever on Mac (I haven't done any recording on a Mac yet).

Does anyone have any thoughts? I was looking perhaps at something like this:

But am wondering whether it is worth the cash, considering I don't really care about the onboard DSP. Perhaps a Presonus Firestudio or something would be more suitable?

Any thoughts?

Look at a Tascam US-800 I got mine for$99 which is a heck of a deal for 8 inputs XLR- 1/4 combo that does 24/96khz. It will also work on an iPad with the camera adaptor kit. I use my US-800 as a portable with my laptop for bedroom recording in bed (when I hurt too much to go to the basement studio).

The RME interfaces like the UFX are nice. I believe that it even interfaces with Ipod/Ipad.

Alright, so I managed to find a Steinberg MR816X on Ebay for about the same price as somewhere like Front End Audio sells it. This is a good thing, since this will have the Australian power adapter, and shipping is obviously a lot cheaper.

Anyway, when I get it next week I'll post up my thoughts!

Really wouldn't go firewire with USB 3.0 and other new interfaces coming out, just a thought.

I have used an M-Audio Firewire 1814 with both Windows (SONAR) and Mac (Garageband). It's get a few years on it but I have not had any problems with it. Doesn't look like you can get one new anymore though.

Just pointing out that there are newer possibly better ways to connect now for getting most use out of it , not that it was good or bad. More data faster ! They make plenty of versions with firewire still just do a search for it on musicians friend geez alot of choices?

Are there any USB3 interfaces out there yet? I haven't seen any.

They are somewhere on the horizon but Thunderbolt seems to have the early edge as the next great interface change.
