Looks like our lines of reasoning are starting to intersect with

as far as splitting the signal.

Splitting the signal like that is a great way to get good sonic variety. I will side with everyone else here, though. Everything needs to serve a purpose. If a piece doesn't need you to do too much in the lower registers, don't be afraid to leave them pretty sparse.

The solution I've come up with, that my band seems to like, is fairly simple. I run my guitar into a bass boost pedal- right now I'm using the EH mole- and I run that into my Red Witch Titan delay, which has three separate analog delays you can put in series or parallel. In the effects loop of the Titan, I run my Fulltone Catalyst (sort of a fuzz/boost with a two band tone control set up). I've got to tweak all the settings in between songs, but I've been able to get lots of interesting sounds that help fill the sonic space without over emphasizing the bottom end. I'll probably continue to switch it up over the course of the next few weeks, but this seems pretty workable.

Well, there are a lot of acoustic players these days with insane slapping/tapping/polyphonic technique. But unlike most of them, Michael was a composer.
