I have one of these old GK 250MLs laying around that an uncle gave me years back and I just can't get it to sound decent to my ears. It always end up sounding too thin, too muffled like a giant lead blanket is on it or as if I'm listening to music on an old battery portable radio. The only decent tone I get from it is if I put all the EQ knobbies at full and kick on the build in reverb and chorus effects.

Here's some clips I made recording through the headphone output jack and mind my shoddy playing.

So does anyone have advice on how to use this thing or should I abandon ship?

You might want to replace the speakers in it also , could be a fairly cheap upgrade that will improve the sound.Those are not the worst sounding bits but in my experience money fixes most amp and gear issues. Cheap/free stuff is easy on the pocket but not so much on the ear(always are exceptions).Just got a little hughes and kettner combo for $699 , that isn't cheap in my book but it is small , light and very portable. Go down to Guitar Center and plug into every amp it might give you an idea or 3 about what sounds good to you.

Given that the sounds of the reverb and chorus are fixed, and all you can do is to turn them on or off, you really can't dial that in very much.

The 250 ML, in its day, was mostly known for being able to kick out a lot of dB, especially into a larger cabinet, from a super tiny amp. The 4-band EQ is active (boost and cut) which may take some getting used to compared to some amp tone controls. Finally, the distortion is solid state, based on some FET circuitry.

Of course, I don't know what type of sound you are after, or what type of guitar you have. If you want to get real twang out of the clean sounds, try using a single coil bridge pickup. Experiment with boosting and cutting the mid and low mids, while everything else is turned up.

don't try and get any sound out of it with the built in speakers... those were literally only for near field monitoring (they used to be mic stand mountable)... you can get some AMAZING tones out of them... but ya gotta use external cabs to get the tone out. just make sure you mind the impedance, they don't tolerate impedance mismatches at all... you can go up (say, from 8 to 16r <ohm>) but don't go lower than 8... 4 ohms and the ass end will smoke.
