Post Road Trip Recording?

Hey, what are some folks' current recipes for on-the-road recording? Seems like every time I go out on tour or whatever, the technology has improved sooo much.

I've got a vacation road trip coming up soon — remote spots in the desert West. I'd like to track some cool music and maybe generate some blog posts about the experience. I was thinking of focusing on iPad rather than the usual laptop approach, partly because I want to play around more with the iOS version of GarageBand. (I've been a GB developer for the last three or four years, but I didn't work directly on the iOS version — the OSX stuff just got ported over.)

Any recommendations on mobile interfaces? I just ordered an Apogee Jam, even though I've had real problems with Apogee's other lower-end products. (They all sound fine, but the build quality has been disappointing.)

Any thoughts/tips?

I recently did a stereo board recording using a friend's Alesis IO dock and was really impressed with it. https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/iODock I personally like the form factor because I hate trying to position and balance a chain of small adapters/cables. I used a Tascam IU2 once and was pleased with the sound quality, but it was built very cheaply. I'd buy the alesis in a heartbeat if I used an ipad.

I second the IODock I've had one for 6 months or so and really like it. There is also a new model designed specifically for multi-track recording. I have never tried it myself but you can supposedly use a Tascam US-800 into the iPad camera kit usb connector,t the Tascam is only $99.00 brand new.

That Alesis thing looks pretty cool, but I think I want something that doesn't require AC. So I bit the bullet and got an Apogee Jam. I'll let you know how it goes....

Hadn't really thought about the AC power being an issue. like the IODock because it powers the iPad so I don't have to worry about the battery running out in iPad during performance. The Apoogee Jam seems like a nice device. Have fun with it. Of course all these 30 pin connector items will be getting cheaper when apple changes the dock connector to a smaller number of pins.

Joe, what had you been running as the I/O for your Macbook/Mainstage setup before?

Oh crap, sorry, didn't see this before. Sorry, Bear!

I have a tone of cheapo interfaces, and I don't love any of them. I've used the Apogee GIO and One, a CEntrace Axeport, and (right now) a Focusrite Scarlett. They all sound perfectly fine, but the workmanship is so sketchy. (The Focusrite is built better, but it's bigger than I need, and I don't perceive a difference in sound quality relative to some of the less expensive I/Os.) I've used lots of other tbings over the years too.

Clearly, all this stuff is designed for the desktop musician on a budget, which is fine. It's amazing and awesome that you can get pretty good sounding I/O so cheaplyI. But I wish SOMEONE would make an I/O with truly stage-worthy construction and the right ergonomics for live use.
