He was such a clever and melodic player. I've always wondered why he doesn't seem to rank higher in the classic jazz pantheon. Maybe it's because so much of his work was with the nat King Cole Trio, and maybe they're perceived as too "pop" for the jazz snobs.

Also: How the &$^%# can Cole play with such driving swing while simultaneously singing three-quarters of a mile behind the beat like that?

Oscar Moore was an amazingly influential player in the blues/r'n'b/soul era. In interview after interview with the masters of that era, Oscar is singled out as a formative influence. It's not hard to see why!
And yeah, Joe, singing lazy whilst playing up (or at least up the middle of the beat) is a tricky business. Trying to sing Junior Parker songs and capture his amazing timing whilst accompanying myself has been a real education; it can be done, but it takes practice, practice, practice.
