I'm left-handed, yet learned to play right. I have some opinions on this, but am curious to know how others feel about the left-right issue.

I'm a righty. When I first picked up a guitar, the fingers were so inept I might as well have taught them lefty. My college roomie was a lefty who played guitar righty but played air guitar lefty -- I thought that was hilarious, but I wonder if there is something more to it.

I've always thought it's pretty arbitrary, though. Notice the lack of left-handed pianos.

I'm curious to know if you do anything else right-handed. Some people are not ambidextrous, but they do different tasks with different hands. My brother catches a baseball lefty but steps up to the plate righty. I say whatever feels natural. If you switch to righty just cause that's what most teachers and material is, that's too bad. If you do it cause it feels right, great!

Pardon the self-promo, but did you see this post I did recently on left/right-handedness?

Are Your Sinister — or Dextrous?

Well, I play golf right-handed because that's how I was taught, but I throw and bat left (I'm hardly the athlete that sentence implies). My theory is a lefty has an advantage learning guitar right-handed because their dominant (left) hand will be stronger and more dextrous than a right-hander and might have an easier time holding down strings and doing things like forming that impossible C chord for the first time. Or I could just be rationalizing the fact that the first guitar I got was right-handed and I really didn't know there could be any difference!
